We spent 2 weeks at the Occidental Grand Xcaret in October 2006. The hotel is beautifully situated on the coast, south from Cancun, and opposite the beautiful island of Cozumel. It has 11 restaurants, 14 bars, 3 swimming pools and a small manmade beach. The beach was the only thing we were worried about before we went, but it was perfect, and spotlessly clean. We could always get a sunlounger, and the sea was clear and calm. It is completely private too, so no need to worry about being hassled.
We stayed all inclusive, and never got bored of the food as there were so many restaurants to choose from. Our favourite was the seafood restaurant which is open air and overlooks the beach and sea. We also enjoyed the chinese, mexican, steak, and italian a la carte restaurants. There were also several snack bars, some open until midnight. The service was excellent at every restaurant we tried, and the staff very friendly. There was a bar at each pool and at the beach, open during the day, and the waiters regularly came around taking orders.
Entertainment was different every night, and included the usual dance/musicals acts, magician and karaoke. There was also a kids club before the main entertainment started. We also visited the sportsbar, which was always busy with a good atmosphere, showing mainly American sports on large TVs. The nightclub opened at 10.30pm, and was very lively, loud and dark. The lobby bar was nice to chill out in at the end of the night, watching the fish swimming in the fountain.
Our room had air conditioning, and was cleaned every day to a very high standard. There was a coffee machine, and a mini bar filled every day with beer, water and soft drinks. Beach towels are free, and you can change them as often as you like, so no need to worry about drying them every night. There is a concierge in each building who can book restaurants and answer any questions, to save you going to the main reception. The taxi bus travels all around the complex, and we never waited more than 5 minutes for it.
We went on several trips during the holiday, including a free visit to Xcaret Park, included in our stay, where we swam with dolphins. We also visited the ruins at Tulum and went on a speedboat trip, where you drive your own speedboat ? probably the best trip we?ve ever been on!
Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel. We loved our holiday here, and will definitely return one day.
